Bonsai

Andrew inherits a long family legacy of Chinese penjing (bonsai). Learning from his father, Andrew has spent most of his life creating beautiful bonsai. In 2003, Andrew gave his first professional talk as a subject matter expert for the Royal Agricultural and Royal Horticultural Societies of NSW – delivering a controversial demonstration that led to uproar from “more-Japanese-than-the-Japanese” traditionalist bonsai practitioners, and establishing his reputation as a young upstart challenging tradition.

Although rooted in a long Chinese tradition, Andrew’s trees seek to explore new possibilities in form and style. He specialises in the use of Australian native species to create strikingly beautiful bonsai that celebrate the individual characteristics of a particular tree, rather than trying to emulate an idealised image. A former Sydney Royal Champion, Andrew is now a sought-after competition judge.

Andrew and his father conduct demonstrations, exhibitions, and workshops throughout Australia, and continue to welcome guests from their nursery in Greystanes where they offer professional advice and guidance, bonsai maintenance, and styling.
